Buddy

Post 8: Buddy

I had wanted a puppy for the longest time. I can’t even begin to tell you how many occasions I tried to convince my parents to get me one. Well, it was getting close to Easter time, 2008, when my parents (without telling me) started looking for cheap beagle puppies. They had apparently been looking for sometime but hadn’t come upon any up to this point. Well, when they finally did, the puppy in their add was in Bedford, Indiana, about three or four hours away from where we live. They decided that they wanted to check this little fella out, so when I got home from school they told me the plan, (which I was so very excited about), and we headed to Bedford. It felt like the longest trip because I couldn’t wait to get there. When we finally did, we were taken by surprise. We came to a fairly run down little home with a barn. There was a crate sitting out, in which I figured my puppy was in. A man, who looked like a grumpy lumber jack, came out to meet us. He wasn’t mean, but wasn’t really the friendliest either. It was obvious that my puppy didn’t like him. Poor Buddy (that’s what I ended up naming him) just shook in the back of the crate and wouldn’t come out. After multiple failed attempts to get Buddy to come, the man went back inside to grab a pig’s ear. (ewww…I know) Finally, Buddy came to the front of the cage. He was adorable; slightly bigger than I had anticipated, but adorable. He was breaking my heart. He looked so sad and timid and really didn’t want to be touched. My parents kept asking if I wanted him, and I really couldn’t decide. I didn’t want a puppy that was afraid of me!! But, I just couldn’t say no to his sad little eyes, so we paid $50 for him and got on our way. He slept in a cardboard box at my feet for most of the trip, but got sick at one point. Honestly, I didn’t care; I was just overly excited that I had a puppy!
He turned out to be a sweetheart. He was timid and frustrated me when I couldn’t get him to come, but he was my little Buddy. Sadly, about a year after I got him, I came home from my first day of school to news that a car had hit him. I bawled…no joke. Actually, my whole family cried. I still have his dog tag that I wear on a chain occasionally. I miss him, but I am blessed to have 2 new beagle pups, Rocky and Adrian.
